Old Testament: The Story of Job

Picture
The Story of Job is considered to be one of the most praised and relatable stories in the Bible. In addition to being such a well written masterpiece, it raises some of the most profound questions that humans can ask. The main theme of this story is: Why does God punish innocent people and let sinners prosper and live long lives? This is something that we find ourselves asking on countless occasions throughout our lives. We wonder why the good people die young while the sinners die old. Its easy to feel like God is picking on you sometimes because things just won't go the way you want them to.

Job is a wealthy man living with many flocks, a nice family and lots to eat. Job is always careful to avoid sinning. Then, one day Satan approaches God. He argues that Job is only behaving like a Saint because God treats him so well. He thinks that if God were to take away some of his privileges, Job would become upset with God and curse him. Boldly, God agrees to Satan's challenge. The devil proceeds to take away all of Job's flocks, kill his servants and even kill his children. However, as God foresaw, Job continues to pray to God and worship him. Job's conviction doesn't change when Satan also creates sores all over his body. He doesn't change his mind about God even when his wife urges him not to. He tries hard to accept the situation without blaming the Lord. After Job is almost convinced by his friends that he must of done something evil to deserve all of these misfortunes, God interrupts the game. He asks Job many rhetorical questions in order to intimidate him and have him acknowledge that God is all powerful and that the extent of human knowledge is nowhere near God's level of intelligence. Now that the test is over, God gives Job is health and double the property back, children and a very long life.

The book of Job is a mind game between Satan, God and Job. Without informing Job, who has never done anything to hurt anybody or anything in his entire life, Satan and God agree to test him on his faith. The reason this is a mind game is because Satan was manipulating job in order to prove his point. However, Job ended up being pure in his convictions about God, so Satan lost the game. God was the winner in this case. An aspect of game theory was even involved in this biblical lesson. Uncertainty played a large part in Satan’s experiment because he did not know for sure that Job would definitely curse God when the privileges once handed to him by God were taken away. While Job did regain his property and health, he still lost his children. This is something that is very hard to recover from. From a modern point of view, what Satan did to test Job was pretty sick.
