How to Tell if Someone is Lying

Picture
Everyone on this planet has lied at one point. Lying is a major part of our lives whether we like it or not. Sometimes we are lied to, and sometimes we are the ones that lie. On occasion we may feel justification for lying, but regardless, people will always be curious about whether or not the person they are talking to is telling the truth. When people lie, their body reacts in a certain way. For example, when people lie, their pupil size increases. Other ways to tell if a person is lying is by looking at their lips. Liars are more likely to press their lips together. People that are lying usually have a nervous speech while their body is very rigid and stiff. They are also more likely to repeat their words and move around a lot. Lie detectors don’t only have to be computer or other technological devices. They could be humans; many people that work in law enforcement are trained to learn if someone is lying by looking at that person’s body language. Though the motivation for lying in any given situation is not always the same, the effect is has on body language is detectable by trained professionals

Body Language:
• Stiff body; keeping to themselves; arms in close proximity with the body
• Avoid eye contact
• Touching face

Emotions
• Timing of emotions is delayed and emotions usually last longer  • Timing of words and emotions delayed; words usually said first, and then the emotion comes
• Emotions don't match words; ex: saying "Congratulations" and frowning
• Emotions only expressed by mouth; ex: fake smile vs. real smile

 Interactions and Reactions
• A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often go on the offensive.
• Discomfort may cause them to look away or turn head away
• Placement of object, unconsciously, between themselves and others

Verbal
• A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers, “No, I did not eat the last cookie.”
• Truth-tellers more likely to use contractions; liars use full two words
• Silences are more awkward and uncomfortable than usual; talk more than usual
